How to choose a roofing company

Published on November 24th, 2014

The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) wants to ensure that homeowners all receive a high-quality roof system at a fair price. Here at Showalter Roofing Services, Inc. we too are passionate about clients receiving the best services possible. That is why we provide craftsmanship that is above the industry standard. Keep in mind when you are considering hiring a company for a roofing project that you should only trust a reliable and proven company.

Guidelines

With that in mind, the NRCA organization offers the following tips before signing a contract:

  • Check for a permanent place of business, telephone number, tax ID number and, where required, a business license.
  • Insist on seeing copies of the company’s liability insurance coverage and workers’ compensation certificates. Make sure the coverage lasts through the duration of the job.
  • Look for a company with a proven track record that will gladly offer client references and a list of completed projects. Call the clients to find out if they were satisfied with the job.
  • Check to make sure the contractor is properly licensed and/or bonded, per the state’s specific requirements.
  • Insist on a written proposal and examine it for a complete description of the work, including approximate starting and finishing dates.
  • Check to see if the contractor is a member of any local, state, regional or national roofing industry associations, such as NRCA.
  • Call your local Better Business Bureau to check for any complaints that may have been filed.
  • Have the contractor explain his or her project supervision and quality-control procedures.Request the name of the person who will be in charge how many workers are required and the estimated time the job will be completed.
  • Read over any roofing warranty carefully and watch for anything that would render it void.
  • If a bid seems incredibly low, be skeptical. Price is only one element to consider when choosing a roofing contractor; remember to think of professionalism and quality workmanship as well.

Remember that your roof can be the source of very, very expensive problems for a home, so hiring a professional is a MUST. A professional can be defined as “as a person who has a specialized body of knowledge and has received intensive training in a particular field.” You can tell the difference between a pro and an amateur by simply lining them up side by side. You’d be able to tell that the professional contractor is:

  • Well-established: They should have a permanent place of business, a phone number, a certificate or license and a tax identification number.
  • Well experienced and knowledgeable: They should have a thorough understanding of their field. They should also be a good problem-solver and they should have spent some time working in the roofing business too.
  • Commitment to proper safety and insurance: Your professional roof contractor should be very careful in their approach to the job. It can be extremely dangerous and can cause not only damage to them, but to your property and to innocent bystanders. Make sure that you have proof of their insurance coverage too.
  • Commitment to education: They should have attended some educational programs that were offered within the roofing industry. Choose trained, experience roofers, instead of laborers who are just employed for a couple jobs.
  • Use of quality materials: They should be interested in more than just finishing the project and moving on. Professional roofers should offer service after they’ve sold and applied their product.
