Look Out For These Roofing Shortcuts

Roofing Shortcuts

The people you hire to do your roofing work should be both honest and professional. You should be sure of them before you give them the job of roof contracting, repairs, renovation or maintenance. This is a huge deal because of the importance of your roof to your house.

Your roof is the covering which stands between you/your family and the elements. It’s in your best interest to keep it in a good condition so that you can enjoy its comfort and security for years to come. Here are some things that the more dishonest or lazy roofers tend to do. They are shortcuts that roofers make that you should look out for:

  • Many times, dishonest roofers choose to recover the roof rather than to replace it like t hey were paid to do. This happens pretty often. Roofers choose to place new roofing on top of old roofing, instead of ripping away the old roofing material and installing the new one. This usually results in the roof looking and functioning well for a while and then a few years later, it deteriorates like it never has before.
  • Another shortcut taken by roofers is the installation of an insufficient ice and water shield. Michigan’s law states that there should be a special underlayment installed at the eaves of the roofs, to stop leaks that may be caused by ice backups below the shingles. Many roofers don’t even bother to install this shield properly or sufficiently.
  • There are no starter shingles on the eaves. When roofers don’t install the starter shingles on the eaves of your roof, it can cause the other shingles in the roof to just blow off with the wind.
  • Sometimes roofers even use staplers instead of nails on the roof. You definitely know these won’t hold for very long. The only thing you should use to fasten your roofing materials on, are nails.
  • Many times, roofers choose not to use felt beneath the eaves of the roof. It can take the place of the ice and water shield, but many times, it isn’t even installed. Roofers know that this is a hidden job, so you won’t be suspecting the lack of it when they say your roof is complete.
