Never Do These Things to Your Roof

Published on December 10th, 2015

Some things are okay for your roof, other things are not. In other words, there are some things that you may do to your roof that have very little effect on them, or no effect at all, while there are other things that you just shouldn’t do to your roof, because they could end up costing you a whole lot of money.

You want to keep your roof in the best condition you can, so that it will last as long as possible. That’s why there are some things you just should not do and we’ll show you what they are.

  • You shouldn’t ignore piles of leaves or branches on your roof: Even though it was nature that put them there, that doesn’t mean they should stay there. That pile of organic matter holds in moisture and breeds mold, mildew and other organisms. That may result in roof damage that may require that you do major repairs on your roof or replace it.
  • You shouldn’t hang light from your roof’s edge: Hanging lights means that you’ll probably have to put holes in your shingles or in the wood of your roof. That’s not the best idea, because it lets moisture in.
  • You shouldn’t mount a basketball hoop on the end of the gable: A better idea would be to get a free-standing basketball hoop instead of screwing your hoop base onto the gable.
  • You shouldn’t add solar panels: Although they are great for saving you money on your energy cost, they may damage your roof. Because of all the drilling and holes that they require, your roof and your attic become prone to water, insects and rodents, etc. If you must install them, have them installed with visible brackets, to prevent roof damage.
  • You shouldn’t mount a satellite dish on your roof: It may get you better reception, but it will also get you some moisture in your roof. That’s because, to keep the dish in place, you need holes and screws to penetrate your roof and those points are where the moisture will enter.
