Roof Tile Replacement Guidelines

Published on September 18th, 2015

Roof damage is quite a dilemma. It’s something, that if left too long, can result in extensive problems with your entire roof or property and it can be a health and safety hazard. You don’t want to procrastinate on moisture damage, which keeps getting more and more serious with passing time and one day causes your entire ceiling to collapse.

That’s why you need to know the type of roof damage you have, the causes and what you need to do to fix it. If you have a tiled roof, it may get damaged by the following:

  • Age and condition: Maybe your roof tiles have done their days and just aren’t in the right condition to keep serving your roof.
  • Weather: We know the effects of tumultuous weather to your roof. Hail can severely damage tiles; storms can knock things like branches and other objects down onto your roof and damage your tiles.
  • People: Yes, people can damage your roof – even if they’re technicians, if they walk on your roof they can cause the tiles to break or chip.

You should inspect your roof for any tiles that are damaged or missing, especially around the first days of spring or autumn. Look at your tiles from different parts around the outside of your house and see if you notice any tiles that are damaged or missing. You can even use binoculars to help you out with that.

To replace damaged tiles:

  • If you are going to do the repair yourself, you need to remember safety. If you aren’t going to do it yourself, get a professional to do the job for you.
  • Ensure that the tile that you are going to do the replacement with is the same size, shape and material as the one which has been damaged or is missing.
  • Remove the broken tile (and try not to let it slide down the roof).
  • Put the new tile in its place and hook it over the batten.
  • Seal the roof by replacing the surrounding tiles.
